Identify these trees please.

I don't know how old these trees are. They were here when I bought the house, and in 3 years have hardly grown much. They don't "fill out" into shade trees... they're kind of dainty. They have never flowered. I have no idea what they are.

Its one of the few really sunny places I have in the yard, so I was going to remove them and put in a fruit tree. But I wanted to find out what they were first, in case they become something awesome as they get older.

Any horticulturists around?

If the leaves of the first tree are serrated, then it's an American Beech.

I really can't see the leaves at all on the second tree

My palm centro is a great phone, but the camera sucks. Plus I uploaded them to facebook using a palm app, which compresses the crap out of them. Sorry for the low quality.

Looked up American Beech. Its definitely not that.

The second one's a Cherry. That should get some pretty white blooms in the spring. I can't tell what the first ones is.

Okay I used a tree leaf key...

I think tree 2 is an ash of some sort.

Maybe you're right a bout tree 1 being a beech. The leaves are still too young, I forget if they end up serrated or not.

What details are you seeing that helps you identify it as a cherry?

The blistered bark, and the shiny silver/grey color.

Tree 1 also has a dogwood look to it. Also very common here in NC.


edit: but none of my dogwoods have leaves yet, so it's probably not.

Okay tree 1 is some kind of ash.

I compared tree 2 to pictures of cherry trees... I think the color and texture is wrong.

In your first picture of bark #1, that's definitely a cherry in the background. If tree #2 looks the same, then it's a cherry.

Hmm...

okay, I'll cut down the ash to give the possible "cherry" some more light. I'll wait until the leaves are fully grown out, and see if it flowers this year.

Why do you want to cut any of them down? I'm a huge fan of trees. If I were to do anything, it would be to clear out the second growth around the larger trees. More trees=less grass to cut :^)

I planned on cutting it all out, so I could plant a sour cherry or plum tree.

That background tree you identified in the tree #1 pic is tree #2. They are about 2 feet apart and branches are crisscrossing.

I'm not sure about the lifespan of ashes, but it isn't terribly long for cherries. You'd be looking at 60 years max, and probably between 40-50 when it starts getting sick, and dropping a lot of limbs.
