So I drove a car this morning that I don't usually have access to. I recorded the sound on my phone, admittedly it's bad quality thanks to some stupid cell phone standard for voice notes, but what car/engine do you think it is?

File will play in Quicktime or Windows media player.

Guess away! :D

Answer below:

The 1KR-FE is a 1.0 L (998 cc) version built in Japan and Poland. Bore is 71 mm and stroke is 84 mm, with a compression ratio of 10.5:1. Output is 68 hp (50 kW) at 6500 RPM with 68.6 ft·lbf (93.0 N·m) of torque at 3600 RPM

Lulz!

Most of you were thrown by the sound of the inline 3 motor, and the fact that for some reason the induction noise is quite loud. I'm guessin because the car has zero sound deadening.

It's a rental car while one of our cars is being fixed, and it's being treated as such. :)

Not an Aveo, not a 'Vette.

Listen to the induction sound, the off-beat thrum to the engine note...

Its not an AMG V8...at least not from that sound clip. Its a terrible quality file, wind noise or something.

I don't believe it, e92 m3....wait no...RS4. I'm so confused.

The sound quality makes it hard to guess but the sound is obiously low pitched and either a V8 or non-balanced shafted V6. A V10 usually sounds higher pitched except for the Dodge Viper, which has a low pitched sound like this clip.

Considering the slow shifts (hehehe), this is manual so that automatically excludes almost all Mercedes.

How high did you take it? All the way to redline?

we also know it's probably naturally aspirated, unless he only took it to 2 or 3k. in that case there's a small chance we might not have heard the SC

I’ll guess a new Mustang 5.0.
The exhaust sounds a little more “burbly” than a stock Audi exhaust I think.
