Having some trouble removing this spot, not sure what type it is to be sure I have the right killer. This is the most prominant weed in the yard, and this is by far the greatest concentration. (a much larger area outside of the pic range is leftover dead weed of this type, but I put some seed with mulch down over the dead area and think maybe that's how this smaller patch has survived the weed killer)

That's crabgrass, I think. I've not found a good crabgrass killer yet. The stuff Ortho and Bayer sell which claim to kill it don't work.

hmmm. well that's not good. I did the entire yard with spectracide w/crabgrass killer and while that killed most (you can see the edges of the part that are yellow and dead in the pic) I also got a bottle of ortho crabgrass killer hand spray and that didn't have an effect either when directly applied..

I guess since I'm watering the seed next to it daily that damn crap is managing to hold off the poison :(

Only way to stop crabgrass is a pre-emergent which would fubar your attempts at seed. Once it sprouts there is little you can do to control it.

I agree with those who have said crabgrass...of one variety or another.

I've never found anything that completely kills it off. Some "weed and feed" products will slow it down or eliminate MOST of it, but it always seems like it either comes back quickly, or never quite dies off.

Scott's Turfbuilder with Halts is supposed to be one of the best on the market...but it's a bit late for it to work at its best. (Feb-April)

Unfortunately the best ways to deal with crabgrass are digging it up or living with it. Nothing seems to kill it.

The horror... grass that doesn't try to cut up ones feet when walked on. :p

Idea: make the whole yard like that so that it what is suppose to be there and thus not really a weed.

I do also have some total vegitation killer, maybe a very light spraying away from the new grass to help loosen the roots before a pull then.

Crab grass doesn't overwinter, you don't have to worry about the roots. It's the seeds they put out. It dies at first frost. Pre-emergent.

A total kill or round up product will kill it, and everything else. For patches that small I wouldn't worry about it and just make sure you put a pre-emergent down next year early. Or hand pull to make sure it doesn't seed, but that grass is going to seed no matter what you do. You'll go to sleep one night and that bastard will make and drop seed before you wake up.
