Identify my CPU please

Hi there,

I've just bought a computer for my brother - an AMD 1700+ palomino... or so it was supposed to be. I am, however, starting to get confused.
First of all: Palomino's (as far as I know) run at 1.75V. My brothers CPU run at 1.5V, autodetected in BIOS (thoroughbred runs at 1.5V and 1.6V right?).

Second: When I gather info about the CPU in windows (using WINCPUID or "set" in command prompt) it displays "Model 8". As far as I know the old Athlon is model 6, the palomino model 7 and the thoroughbred (A and B) model 8.

Third: Having thought :"maybe they f'ed up and gave me a thoroughbred" I wondered - does the thoroughbred go as low as 1700+??? Lowest I've seen on the market is 1800+.

All in short: Is this a Palomino or a thoroughbred?

Regards,
Nimbus

Sounds like you've got a Tbred ,& yes they do go down to XP1700 though I understand they are rare

That's cool! Finally I'm lucky.

Btw. is there somewhere where I can see the tbreds compared to the palominos. Somewhere where I can see what Palomino equials what Tbred? I have searched the net looking for a scale (regarding performance) with the AMD models but haven't been able to find one.

I'm trying to find out what to buy for myself, palomino or Tbred. I know that the Tbred is best but..... CASH is the problem here (and a serious one). And don't tell me to wait until I can afford a Tbred cause I'm PERMANENTLY broke :D
I don't even know if my K7S5A supports Tbred....

And thanks for the replies!

Nimbus

Latter XP1600 Palaminos overclocked really well :) ,e.g AGOIA steppings etc. mine goes to 1.75Ghz I haven't hit the limit yet!

As far as peformance goes between the 2 cores XP1700=XP1700! ,there's no difference in performance. Its just the Tbreds cores are on a smaller micron process (0.13 vs 0.18) & runs cooler ,the lower clocked ones also run a slightly lower vcore too.
As far as overclocking goes I would think the lower clocked Tbreds ought to overclock to around the XP2000 area ,maybe XP2200 if your lucky! (thats the highest clock speed available from the Tbred A cores).

According to Overclockers.com CPU database for the Tbred XP1700 ,this is the average overclock

T-Bred 1700 Results....

Total Entries in Database for T-Bred 1700 - 43
Average overclocked speed - 1861 Mhz

I was about right;)

Good luck!
Btw you do know that CPU core must have a copper HS right?

A T-bred. It's rare indeed...I've got one.

Must have a copper HS? What does HS stand for?

And what about the newer TBreds - are they better than the palomino's? I know some of them run 333fsb which is better than the palomino's 266. But what about the 266 Tbreds compared to 266 Palomino??

I'll try to put this short (I ask a lot I know): With the given amount of money I have I can choose between two CPU's:

AMD Athlon Palomino XP 2000+ (1667MHz)

OR

AMD Athlon Thoroughbred XP 1800+ (1533MHz)

Which one of them should I buy?

HS=Heat Sink

But what about the 266 Tbreds compared to 266 Palomino??
The best pick is the XP2400 because that is a Tbred Bcore & they are very overclockable :) ,though they are still quite expensive atm.

I believe that any XP Tbred from XP2200 lower uses the Tbred A core (not so good overclocker but still good for 1.8-1.9GHz) ,anyone confirm this?

I would think the XP1800 would be better if you plan to overclock as that will reach a higher FSB ,it might reach 166MHz? ,if you don't want to overclock & you can afford it go for the XP2000.

Have you found out if your K7S5A supports Tbreds?
What FSB does your mbrd run?
Does it have a 1/5 PCI divider or a PCI bus lock?

I'm not so keen on overclocking since my CPU will have to last a looong time, I rarely upgrade because it's too expensive :p
I don't really like the OC because of the extra heat that is developed, over a longer period of time that might damage the circuit. And no I can't afford a better cooler ;) But then again maybe I will OC, if it doesn't turn my CPU into a radiator.....

At the ECS homepage it says: "Full series of Athlon XP" so I suppose it supports the Tbred...

My Mobo runs 100, 133 fsb (DDR 200/266).

I don't know what the "1/5 PCI divider or a PCI bus lock" is so I can't answer that one...

Oh and btw.... just for fun I OC'ed my Athlon 800.... it now runs 900 with 8x112 :)
Couldn't make the 1G though... :(

Nimbus

lol ,what do you think a HS is? it radiates heat;) ,I know what you meant though ,if you don't increase the cpu voltage & don't massively increase the clock speed you'll only get a very small increase in heat output.

If the only FSB options are 100 & 133 then you don't need to worry about the PCI divider. What I mean though is that at 133MHz you need a 1/4 divider for the PCI bus to keep it at 33MHz ,at 166MHz you'd need a 1/5 divider.A fairly new (I think) option is to have the PCI bus locked at 33MHz regardless of FSB,which is really cool:) ,& I wished that had been around for years!

Nice little boost for your 800 btw:)

I've just written the longest post in history - a small P.H.D.

Then I pressed "post" only to realise that I had forgotten to write user name and pass..... AAAAAAAARRRRGHHH!!! :| :| :|

Hate when that happens...

With my new BIOS I can actually choose between a number of preset fsb's. 100, 110, 112, 133, 148 etc... So I guess my mobo has a PCI divider....

And I've decided to go for a palo. 2000+. I won't go lower since I don't want to depend on OC'ing. I will probably try to OC but I won't cry if it can't. And no, I won't change the Voltage.... must I say more than P = (U^2)/R ...... ;)
