Identifing Thouroughbred Athlons..

i plan to buy a new system, i would like to know how i can differentiate between the athlonxp palomino and thouroughbred cpus by looking at the retail boxes or some other easily identifiable way, without opening the box.
thanks.

retail eh.....
ive never had a retail box in my life, so i have no idea lol

if its oem, look at where the stepping information is located
if its on a sticker next to the raised part, then its a thoroughbred
if its on the raised part itself (core) then its a palomino

do they give you some numbers or wahtever on the box, or just say "amd athlon xp" ?

Yeah, through the rear. They're that dastardly, hard-to-open welded-plastic type of package. Great for protecting CPUs, hard to open 😛

Another way is to look for the AXDA code, which signifies the T-bred. Or just buy from someone who differentiates them for you.

The Palamino dies are noticably larger than the Thoroughbreds. Large enough that there's room for laser etching of the serial number on the die itself. The Thoroughbreds have all this information on a black decal on the ceramic with the die being free of etchings. It's relatively easy to spot a Palamino and a Thoroughbred at a glance. It's much harder however, to spot a Thoroughbred A and B.

as a couple of folks have already said, the palomino has the steppings etched on the core, the thoroughbreds have them on a sticker.

also, there are resistors on the top of the thoroughbred which will be visible in the retail box. the palominos had them on the bottom center in the space between the pins.

yes, but now whats this stuff i read about different thouroughbreds ? a ? b ?
those that have the 2nd line of the code beginning with A or J .. ?
Im confused, what do i go for ?

txxxx's link seems to have all the information you need. 😀

i'm going to sound like an ass, but are you reading people's responses? your question was Palomino vs. Thoroughbred and they addressed that directly and definitively. txxxx's post has info on the A vs B even before you asked! :|

for some sources of guaranteed Tbred-B's see my query here. throw in the build week # and you're set to be even more confused!! 😕

hth????? 🙂
