Since you are in New York...

Here is where I am getting my dental work done.
It will cost me $1,000. for what I am having done. The dentists I went to wanted between $6-7,000. It takes two screening days, then two weeks to get assigned a student doctor. There are professors and certified dentists overseeing everything. The b/f had a tooth pulled at his dentist and it cost him $225.00 two years ago. I went here and it was $55.00 + $30. for gas.

It is clean, professional and a fraction of the price.
They are on vacation now, and wont be back until Spetember. If you can wait that long, I would suggest you give them a try.

I am not embarrassed! :)

When i raised VeggieFrog, I did so 100% on my own. there was not enough money for both of us to get dental/medical care, so I made sure she got, and ... well, I did not.

I have some splintering of the bone in my jaw, and infection/inflamation of the gums. I need to have a night guard made, and I will need some bridgework done. I will need to get a planing and a scraping of my bone under the gums. I have elected to get permanent bridgework done, as opposed to kind that comes out every night. Where the bridework will be.. on the bottom... the teeth above the spaces have grown down lower than the rest of the teeth on top. They will have to be realigned and (dont know how) but they will make them so the top teeth are all the same length. Most of this stuff is in the back.. my front teeth are perfect shape and size. No one can tell looking at me smile or speak that I have a mess in my mouth.

All of this is a direct result of not getting regular dental care. So advice to all.. GO TO THE DENTIST REGUALRY!

On a side note... The b/f.... he needs work too. his is more intense than mine... his front teeth.. well, the two in the very front... one did not appear until he was 16yrs old and then it grew higher in the gum and sideways, almost on top of the other... They are positioned so that no matter how much he brushes, the one beneath is getting rotten and they will have to ... well, I dont know what they will do, but they told him that they can fix it. He says that a long itme ago (10+ yrs) his dentist wanted $4,000. to remove them and the reinsert them, drilled into his jaw. He will start his dental treatment in the NJDS in October. they estimate $900. for this problem.

okay, sounds pretty major :) My dentist seemed very sure that I should go to an experienced orthodontist instead of a university, though. Argh, I don't know what to do. I think I'll need to get a few other dental opinions.

Anyone else have a good method of saving for a large purchase?

:camera:'s?

sorry.... it's a fetish :Q

it is minor/minute splintering. but it causes bacteria to get caught in the little splinters. and that caused my gums to get red and swollen. There is a fully certified orthodontist on site who will oversee the procedure. I have already had my introductions with him. He will be there to stand over my student dentist.

The student dentists have already had two years of classwork before they are allowed to touch a patient. And they may only do so for the third year with a fully certified/licensed dentist present. Each procedure I am having done is in a different department and each has the certified/licensed person there. Once the students are in the fourth and final year, then there is only one cert/lic professional per three students.

The enrollment is a bit of a PITA, but once you get the student dentist, it is clean, and fully staffed with professionals. Well worth the price and savings.

Wow, you guys are so so so lucky (now, not previously to have those problems). My problem isn't severe, I mainly just have a gap inbetween my front teeth and my bottoms are slightly crooked. I went to a place to get it checked out and it was ridiculous, they wanted like $3500 for my minor problem, there's no way I could come near to affording that anytime soon. I so so so much wished that I lived near there... do you know of any other places? Maybe someplace in FL or near? Or know where I can look? Or when you go, is there any chance you can ask if there is a good way I can find out if there is such a dental school in my area? I am sooooo interested, that sounds soooo great!!

And best of luck to you guys!

I wish I wasn't working 80+ hours this week. When I went into the orthodontist for a free exam, they took all of these pics of my mouth from all different angles and printed it for me. I'd post it if I get a chance.

Orthodontists are really bringing in the dough these days it seems. For me alone braces were near $6k and I have two younger siblings who have had them as well.

most insurance doesn't cover elective dental surgery. I have dental, but it specifically excludes orthodontal work. I'll ask them though whether a more serious procedure like oral surgery would be covered.
