For those who feel that Microsoft is taking control over too much of our computing and internet life .....
Here is my contribution to some possible ways against the mighty MS:
The root of the problem lies in the fact that almost everybody's PC runs the Windows OS platform. Therefore, if AOL Time Warner or IBM or Apple wishes to come out as winners ..... some form of collaboration will need to happen and happen fast. First order of business is to adopt an alternative OS, whether it be MacOS or Linux, whichever works the best for household consumers and enterprise. Then, the next step is to side-step Microsoft's productivity tools by adopting an alternative to MS Office, such as Corel. If these 2 steps are successful, half the battle is won. Finally, in order to curb Microsoft's initiative to control the internet with MSN and .Net, a few of the web's biggest entities will need to join forces to integrate features of MSN and .Net for the end-users. Another area that Microsoft seems to pose some threat is in wireless and handheld computing. Palm needs to do everything possible to maintain their lead by making PalmOS more powerful than the PocketPC platform feature-for-feature.
