I've seen the way to attach a blank faceplate to the front of the tray that most CDROM drive have. But neither my CD-r drive nor DVD have that. After reading the Lain Li reviews I had an idea:

On my CD-r there is a small hinged door on the front and has a thin tray come out. So make a blank faceplated into a large hinged door that covers the complete drive, when the tray opens the door will simply swing down and allow the tray to come out. On CDs without the hinged door and only a flat cover piece, the piece can usually be removed to eliminate catching.

On my DVD which is slot load it's even an easier solution (though not stealth. Make a thin slot in the face and put a little strip of some soft material on the bottom edge to eliminate the risk of scratching.
