Howdy,
In our building we have 4 different LAN Closets. Each closet controls a certain part of the building. All the jacks in each closet are the same as the other closets and run 1 - 300 or so. We currently have no master list of any sort that shows every jack and where that jack goes to. So if I need to find a certain port, I normally know what closet it is in but have no way of knowing what room the jack is located in.
We are trying to come up with a way of having this informatino contained and be very usable.
Currently we have a big excel sheet that simply lists port numbers and room numbers which is fine. We also have some sort of HTML document with an imagemap of the building and when you click on a room it pops up a blueprint of the room with where each jack is in the room. It works fine but it's incomplete and the person who started it doesn't work here any more and we don't know what he used to make it.
So, we're looking to just start over and do a building inventory finding all the ports (aren't interns great) but need ideas on how to best contain that information. We definitely like having a blueprint so if I need a jack in a certain room I can see the room layout and where the jacks are and pick the one I want without having to actually go back to each room.
I'm sure an AutoCad type program would be perfect for this, but we don't have programs like that.
If anyone has any suggestions on the best way to do this (no option to go buy special software) please let me know.
Thanks.
