Myself and some friends from other colleges are gathering in our home town this thanksgiving, there will be a Lan. (duh)
I have been coming up with some idea's, but have questions:
A dedicated server is a must this time, In the past people with the faster computers have hosted games but thats like a tax, on framerates.
I have a boat load of good computer/server stuff at home to work with.
I can use a compaq ProLiant with Dual PII 450's and a cool gig of PC100 ECC/Registerd, and 5 scsidrives and some raid controllers to host games and files. I can also 'tote' my 100lb proliant 6500 with quad P3 Xeons over there, but I dont think the preformance gains would be significant enough to justify the effort.
I have 6 compaq dual port NICs and the first proliant has 6PCI slots.....what if I loaded it up for 12 independant nics and connected all the client computers direct to the server with crossover cables. Would this work for gaming? Would it be better than a switch? Each of 12 computers would have a 100Mb connection as opposed to a shared 100mb....
This seems great to me because some people play games....while others are playing different games....while others are using the internet(to download porn) and some are coppying game folders and MP3's. I know this isnt the most practacal solution, but I dont care because I already have everything I need. Compaq also has software for network teaming, I can make all the NICS have the same logical mac address or IP or both if needed.
please advise
thanks
