Ideas for getting rid of mice and keeping them away?

A week or two ago, I posted this.

So today, as I go about wiping the counter top, moving things out of the way etc., I find some more mice droppings behind the toaster. I go to pretty good lengths to keep my home very clean, but I do have two small children and sometimes even my best efforts arent good enough;). The toaster (with minor crumbs inside) was obviously a focal point for another one of the dead guy's buddies which I overlooked. It has since found its way into the outside garbage.

Anyway, setting more traps over the next few days is a given, but I am looking for a solution to actually drive away any more of the little whisker twitchers which head this way. I cant get a cat right now, because I just dont have time on my hands for proper responsible pet care and the extras that go along with it.

Any ideas, or helpful hints?

I lay out mice/rat poison in various places ie: in kitchen cabinets, the attic and other places where it is not obvious. Some of the poison has been there for years.

No rats and no mice. I actually had both in the house.

Figure out how they're getting in the house to begin with and where they're nesting. Seal them all up.

I was considering poison, but I would hate to start smelling the dead and not being able to locate or get to them for removal. I like the traps because they are dead on the spot with no guessing.

Yeah, I am definitely going to do some investigation into that

Or fifteen. Become the cat lady that everyone talks about, then later, when the find your skeleton, and many hungry cats (death first, then cats eat corpse), they'll condemn your house. Bam! No more mice. Warning: This method may take upwards of forty years, but it WILL work. :D

Besides the fact that I posted in the OP that a cat was not an option right now, I am not really much of a cat lady;)

That could be a problem and I must confess that I have found a dead mouse and a dead rat in the 27 years that I have lived here but I had no smell.

My cat has brought many mice, birds, and lizards INTO the house to play with, but never killed the two mice that came in on their own (hmmm, or maybe he brought them in too?)
