Ideas for Family Photo Album Website

Hey everyone, so I have about 800 slides of my extended family from as early as the 1930s. I am 21 years old so obviously don't know many of them. I had an idea of creating a website where I could post these pictures, family members could go on, look at them, comment about them, etc. I have a few more specific details and need to know the feasibility of them.

1. Anyone here know www.facebook.com? I would like to have a feature where a family member could take one of the pictures, click a box around a person's face, and label that person (If you have been to the website, you know what I am talking about). This way, they could, for example, search for all pictures with um... "Mary Geary", and it would pull up all pictures based on whether somebody has labeled this person or not. The reason for this is that I have over 800 slides, PLUS i probably don't know 30% of the people in the pictures.

2. I would also like to have a comment section under each picture, so family members could be like "Oh, thats my mother at her wedding in 1945!", etc.

3. Now this is where I think it gets a little tough. I would like, if possible, to have an interactive family tree, where family members could go on and add branches to there line (and maybe even supplementary information such as birthdates, death dates, etc.) Are there programs that you can imbed in websites that do this, or would I have to write the code myself.

Ok, now four detail questions

4. In case this really takes off within the family, I would like level of redundancy so that if something goes wrong we don't lose anything. So, should I set this up in an SQL database maybe? Granted, I'm not real familiar with it, but I have had experience in the past and I am a quick learner. So, could I have the picture in one cell, comments in another, maybe even the names of the people in the picture in another. I'm actually pretty lost on this part and would appreciate any suggestions on how to make this feasible.

5. Does anyone know the cost of getting slides scanned and make digital?

6. Ok, I know if I don't restrict the site with passwords (which I don't believe I will), there is a possibility that someone could go in there and mess everything up on purpose. So I was wondering if there was a way where any changes (names, added pictures, changes to family tree) would have to be approved by me first (either through email, or logging into the website as an administrator and approving).

7. Lastly, what is the difficulty of doing all of this. I am not a professional in the computer field, but have had some experience in coding in the past. I am a quick learner who is dedicated to doing what is necessary to get the job done, so tell me what I need to learn, and I will learn it.

Also, I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, so please move it with my apologies if necessary. Another thing, it may be best if when answering these questions, you put the question number before your answer to help organize. Thanks.

Thanks again anandtech for always helping me whenever I need it. I really appreciate what this community does.

you lookin to do this for free? I mean the web hosting part. If you can spare 3 bucks a month, www.hostpc.com is great. As far as scanning the slides, 800 is a lot, I know Ritz camera will do them for 60 cents a slide, not sure how much of a deal that is as I don't know any other places prices off hand. Even if you could find a place that would do them for lets say 30 cents, that would still be 240 bucks. You could probably buy an older, but still good scanner that has a slide adapter for dirt cheap on Ebay

scanner on ebay
not too expensive and would do what you need, might be slow but would be far cheaper then any place that'll scan for you.

if you go with a hosting place you pay for, you can easily set up a photogallery, the one I mentioned hostpc.com had a section where you fill in a bit of info (nothing technical) and it will install a pre-setup gallery. As far as free hosting I believe there's somebody on ATOT offering free hosting to ATOT peoples - can't beat that deal.

Yeah, I'm definitely looking to buy some webspace for this. However, I'm worried about using pre-set up galleries and such, just because of the level of detail (the tagging of people in the pictures, and some other things I want to do. I was thinking about just buying some linux space, the domain name, and then following some tutorials to get it up and running functionally, and then just writing code for any detail I would want from there.

There are hundreds of gallery scripts out there and most are free.

What's your budget for web hosting?

The 1and1 home package is only like 4 bucks a month with 120 gb of webspace...does that sound satisfactory enough. Yeah, I'd figured that there were many gallery scripts out there, but how about the one I mentioned above, where you can click a small box around a persons face and then add a tag to that person with there name. I kinda want to toss that data into a database so that I could have people search for one of there family members, and it would pull up every picture tagged under that name. Is that possible?
