Ideal media center solution - other than MCE

I need to be able to stream tv to two other locations.

Currently I have a vista pc that serves up MCE to one other tv (with an xbox 360 as an extender). However, my 360 has recently bit the dust. On top of that, I don't want to have to run MCE on my main pc. It's a pita to back up all of my recorded shows and series settings before I format - not to mention that the tv in the living is down until that's finished. Ideally MS would let people use a pc as an extender...

So - here's what I'm looking to do:

1) Dedicated media pc in closet that streams to:
2) PC in computer room
3) PC in living room

Is there anything out there (mythbuntu, etc etc) that will let all 3 pc's update the guide? Vista MCE won't let you do this since you can't use a PC as an extender. This means I am forced to run MCE on my computer room PC which is also my gaming rig and forced to use a 360 (or other dedicated "extender") in the living room.

Grr... ended up not being able to toy with it last night..

....since there doesn't seem to be much interest in this - can someone recommend a good htpc forum?

ok.. I've decided to just buy an hdhomerun for my computer room pc and put my pvr-500 in the living room pc... problem solved.

I got gb-pvr up and running... wow, it's fugly. Too fugly, actually...

Wow... okay, I now have the pvr-500, hdhomerun, and just bought two ati HD 650's on clearance at best buy for $60 each...

So, the PVR-500 and hdhomerun will be tied to my office pc and the two ati tuners will go in the living room pc..

It's disappointing that there is not a method to use a PC as an mce extender.

Not an extender. However, if you set up your network shares and permissions correctly, I don't see why it couldn't simply be a dedicated HTPC.

edit: uh...durrr....maybe that was the thread's point. n/m I'm dumb.
