ideal laptop for a university student

Hi
I have been using a 15" powerbook since my 10th grade year in high school but I have always struggled a bit with the height. The new ibooks came out and I can upgrade the hardware significantly for 950$ My uncle wants to buy my powerbook for $1000 and I think this would be a good deal for me because a 12" ibook would be easier to carry around in class.

My question is: Are there any 12" or smaller windows notebooks which can be bought for +- 1000$? or is the ibook the best deal I can find. I really would like to use a windows book.

It's hard to find small laptops in the 12" class that are affordable on the Windows side. Averatec is the only real alternative I could think of, and while the CPU and hard drive specs are good, the video is atrocious (it's an S3 UniChrome - good luck with 3D games on that one). I'd also be a bit anxious about tech support.

Really, I'd just go for the 12" iBook. It's certainly compact enough, it's reliable, and it has built-in 802.11g wireless.

IBM Thinkpad X31. Great laptop. Get a used one if you can't afford a new one these things are built like tanks and are quite light.
