In case you have been living in a cave

http://www.theglobeandmail.com...0612/BNStory/National/

Now I figure this has royally pissed off anyone under 40. I just want to make sure everyone under 40 is aware of this and watch the politicos carefully.

I was thinking of getting every uth to fight this. Anyway to spread the word to everyone? Not all the youth read news.

Step 1, petition MPs to vote against it
Step 2. watch them like a hawk
Step 3. If they vote for the bill, punish them at the poll. In any case the Conservatives who tabled this motion deserve to be punished. So vote for some other party, or better, vote the Green party in.

Any more suggestions? I don't really want to spam everyone.

I didn't hear about this until now, but It doesn't affect me too much because it seems to be focused mainly on uploaders.

wrong. you won't be able to get an unlocked GSM phone. Nor rip CD you bought if it comes with copy protection.

No ripping of DVD you bought to HDD since that is circumventing copy protection.

I am not bitching about the stopping the torrent part. I am fine with that. It's the other stuff that scares me. It looks like as a paying customer, you have no rights.

I have sent an email to my local MP and joined the facebook group for fair digital rights in Canada and my local chapter of the fair digital rights group.
I think they are planning rallies/protests in each city. This bill has to go down, illegal to rip CDs to an ipod??? that is crazy

Unless they are willing to send someone to my house and change my 1200+ store bought dvds when I feel like watching a particular movie. I am going to keep my DVD ISOs on my HDDs

I'm not sure much against the piracy portions of this, but I despise DMCA-type legislation. I'll be seeing what I can do to fight this on my end.

Hmm, that's interesting... I don't think that a new law can be applied retroactively to old "crimes" can it? If that's the case then your ISOs are perfectly legal. And I suppose me downloading them off of you is also legal because I'm not breaking any digital locks because those iso files are already broken... :)

If it makes you feel any better, DMCA really isn't enforced in the US and probably won't be in Canada either. I've yet to hear of a person being taken to court for backing up their DVDs. MPAA is probably scared to even try this, because they know SC will have the sense to rule that it falls under fair use, which would nullify that part of the DMCA.

But I still applaud you guys for fighting the legislation, hopefully it's repealed. On behalf of America, I'd like to apologize for the RIAA and MPAA, lol. :p

I would rather it doesn't pass into law in its current form. I am going to call my MP. I really don't care for the copyright law to be so restrictive while street racers get house arrest when they caused death of a cabbie.

Whether it is enforced or not, it is not the point. The point is it is bad law.

My bad, I thought it had already passed.

I am hoping it dies since it was introduced late. Maybe that is Harper's plan, appear to cooperate but set it up to fail.

I am willing to give him the benefit of doubt. As long as it does not get passed in its current form.

I wonder have things changed from Sheila Copps pushing to block grey market satellite? Since that attempt failed, let's hope this one fails miserably.

difference is the Conservatives are in power...minority, but I don't see Dion pushing. I have a feeling Dion was setup to fail by Kennedy.

Too bad you decided that all of us "over 40s" wouldn't understand or be concerned about this issue. In any case not much I can do about Canadian law even though Shock of Shocks I follow what goes on with this issue here pretty closely.

no, I am saying the ones over 40 don't need the motivation. I apologise if I did not make this clear.
