Idea for helping new SETI members

Just had a thought (no funny comments please 😉)

What do you guys think about assigning an experienced SETI cruncher to each new recruit? Kind of a Big Brother type thing. That way each of us would just have a small group of newbies that we could personally watch over and coach along, until they got rolling and felt more comfortable in the forums.

I know that when I signed up, there was NO WAY that I would have posted anything in the public forums that would show my ignorance 😉 And thus, I ran SETI for over a year using the GUI...not even aware that there was a faster option available.

Any comments or thoughts???
 
Sounds like a good idea to me!
We would have to get the new members e-mail address though or just let Smokeball handle it all😀 j/k
 
Nice Idea. We could get a "pool" of experenced guys ( and gals 😉 ) and dool them out as prize packages 🙂

Seroiusly tho, that is a good idea.

The DC forum is the friendliest forum here at Anandtech. I've been a TA member for a little over 2 months now. I've never seen a flame war or anything like that in DC. I can't say that about the other forums...:frown:
I don't think anyone should be worried about asking for help here. 🙂 In fact, I may be needing some assistance on Friday. But that's a thread for another day... 😉

Edit: I just thought about it......525+ posts in 2 months. 😱 I'm nowhere near catching Engineer in the posts/day category, though! 😀
 
Being new myself, I'd have to say that it would help the comfort feel a great deal. There's many questions I have that I just don't ask because I figure I'll either learn em in time, or just remain ignorant because I don't want to feel... dumb? 😉

Hell, I got the CLI version installed and processing WU's just fine now, but I missed about 8 hours of crunching (nearly 3 WU's for me) because I didn't know orangekid's proxy was down and I couldn't get new packets. A mentor at that time could have saved me some time and helped the team more.

Anyway, definately a great idea, at least from a newb's perspective 🙂
 
I think this is a great idea and would be willing to help.

Also I think it would help us in knowing each other a little closer.

If we all had somebody that was helping us personally or us helping somebody you will develop a friendship quicker than just throwing yourself out on a public forum. I already think this is the friendliest group that I've ever encountered, but just think if it got even friendlier, and everybody knew everybody's first name.
 
Sounds like a good idea in the making here. Wish we would have thought of this earlier when the new members were flooding in. Sure have slowed down...maybe we need Engineer back on the job. 😉

I asked for some help in my 1:00 PM Update yesterday and only got one response. We have a lot of new members who have joined this year that have zero WUs...that's right, they have never completed their first WU. Check out the New Members Since January 1st Report listed each day on my 1:00 PM Update and you will see who they are.

Why don't we get this started with the list posted here and have volunteers speak up and announce who they are going to try to track down on the forums and help. After we give that a good effort, I can then assign Big Brothers to the remaining zero producing recruits. I can send them your handle on the AT Forums and if you will allow it, your email address. That way their SETI EMAIL will be kept in confidence. 😉

Use the SEARCH tab and then go to the FORUM USER SEARCH at the bottom of that page. 😉

Just go ahead and pick out some of the names and see if you can find them in the AT Forums and try to contact them. 😉
