Idea: Buy "dead" CPU's to scrap the gold pins.....

I was thinking of buying a box of 20 dead AMD XP's off of Ebay so I could scrap the gold pins off of each CPU. I'm pretty sure I can get 2 ounces worth of gold. Then I could take it to my friend's dad and he'll smelt it into one coin. Wadda think?!? :p

The pins are only gold plated, so the amount of gold is very small.

Are those pins all gold or just gold plated?

2 ounces of gold would be worth 800 dollars. I hope it works out for you.:p

Yes definately a pipe dream. If there were enough gold in the pins, most chips would hold a value of not less than X amount based on the mere gold content. I would do more reasearch if I were you. Perhaps even emailing Intel and AMD.

You might make more money buying and selling real estate with no money down part time, making money in futures and options, placing ads in national papers, selling prepaid legal services, amway, designer imposter perfume.....you get the picture - I hope.

Wait! :Q I've got it! Chop them down so the core is surrounded by about 1cm of substrate on all sides, then make earings out of them! :Q Go to a LAN party and see if you can sell 'em to the gamer chicks, or at least their boyfriends

Or just fashion the processors into earrings themselves. :D

I think they're solid gold. But it'll depend on what quality gold they use. If it's bottom of the barrel type gold (which I highly doubt), I could at the least make $200 by smelting all the gold pins together. Why do you think CPU's are so dang expensive? It's not because of the silicon, that's BS, it's becuase of the GGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLDDDDDDD!

Get a clue. CPUs are "so dang expensive" because of the production cost to design, build and market chips. You are pretty funny for a twelve year old.

No. They are not solid gold. There is no reason for them to be made of solid gold, and lot's of reasons for not making them solid.

i tried it, they are only gold plate.

Try getting one dead cpu, cut some pins and heat them, you`ll see they`ll melt really fast and change color. they are most likely made out of tin (Sn; melts at 449.41998 °F/231.9 °C ) then gold plated for better conductivity (gold (Au; melts at 1947.9741 °F/1064.43 °C) is only second to silver for electricity and heat conductivity) they are then soldered to the circuit board

only the outside of the pins need to be gold. The gold aids in lwoering contact resistance since it conducts electricity a little better, does not oxidize (rust), and is softer, making for a better physical contact.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold

The high electrical conductivity and resistance to oxidation of gold has led to its widespread use as thin layers electroplated on the surface of electrical connectors to ensure a good, low-resistance connection.

R&D

It costs over a billion dollars to make that first chip. That is, building a fab and everything that entails. fab clean rooms are several times cleaner than an operating room, as one example. It's very interesting stuff.

hah uh oh, guess i threw away some money...

i have had an 1800+ Palo on my keychain for a few months, and at work over the course of a few weeks (i work sundays only, HS student) i have pulled off all the pins and had them in a pile... then i threw them all on the floor.

oh well.

i made a key chain out of a socket p3(got it dead from a frend). if you cut the pins with a dremel look out, pins fly every where.

yikes, glad i didnt try that.

i just punched a hole in the corner with a dremel, and bent the pins off one by one with a fingernail.

a lil painful at the end of the day :)

Also I remembered how sometimes Newegg has dead CPUs for like 50 cents apiece. If there were that much gold they would be worth more.
