I was thinking of buying a box of 20 dead AMD XP's off of Ebay so I could scrap the gold pins off of each CPU. I'm pretty sure I can get 2 ounces worth of gold. Then I could take it to my friend's dad and he'll smelt it into one coin. Wadda think?!?

I think they're solid gold. But it'll depend on what quality gold they use. If it's bottom of the barrel type gold (which I highly doubt), I could at the least make $200 by smelting all the gold pins together. Why do you think CPU's are so dang expensive? It's not because of the silicon, that's BS, it's becuase of the GGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLDDDDDDD!Originally posted by: bmg
The pins are only gold plated, so the amount of gold is very small.

The high electrical conductivity and resistance to oxidation of gold has led to its widespread use as thin layers electroplated on the surface of electrical connectors to ensure a good, low-resistance connection.

i made a key chain out of a socket p3(got it dead from a frend). if you cut the pins with a dremel look out, pins fly every where.
