IDE vs. SataII

Greetings,

I am aware of the differences and theoretical speeds of the two interfaces. But what I am curious about is what is the actual real life performance gain.

Not naming any specific drives, can anyone give an estimate percentage difference in performance between IDE & SATAII?

Or does anyone know of any good benchmark sites comparing IDE and SATAII drives?

That depends on so many things. If you're just comparing a single IDE drive and a single SATA drive in a bare system, the difference is probably nil.

But if you have a slave drive (could be worse with optical) or have lots of USB stuff or PCI cards, then you will start to see IDE lagging.

Well, IDE to SATA is probably the last place you should spend your upgrade budget.

HDTach also lists results for some typical drives.

As long as the interface is faster then the STR of the hard drive, the performance will be the same. So if you get a newer HD with an STR of 80+ mb/s, and try and put it on an ATA/66 PATA port, you will limit the HD's performance.

But with SATA maxing at 150mb/s and SATAII at 300mb/s, and ATA maxing at 133mb/s, you won't see a difference between these interfaces, since all HD's STR are below 133mb/s. (Although some drives are getting close to that 133 number)

In general, look at the HD's specs, they will determine the performance that you see.
