IDE to USB adapters

How does something like this or this power the IDE drive it connects to? Would something like this be a bad idea for recovering data from slightly damaged drives? Any recommendations on a specific product?

EDIT: Need something for both laptop and desktop drives, by the way.
 
Some of them power the laptop drives via the USB connection, however some of them require an external power source.

I have this one and it powers laptop drives through the USB plus it comes with a SATA adapter and the power adapter to run 3.5" drives. It has been great and I would recommend it.
