IDE to USB 2.0 adapter question

so basically i want to get a box that i can carry around and put different HDs into. all the ones i have seen so far are IDE.

so i was thinking about getting a converter. my question than is what are the pros and cons?

the HUGE con i see is that power then becomes an issue. i wouldn't have a true external drive because i still have to hook into the PSU. or is there a way around it?

are there USB to Pin power adapters? so that i could plug this thing into two USB ports, one fore the IDE adapter/infor the other for power...

can someone please help me. or give me some advice.

There are external closures that have power adapters to connect to the hard drive. You will still need an external power supply though. The enclosure usually comes with a power supply unit. You can then plug a USB 2.0 cable from the enclosure to your computer and your computer will see the enclosure as a regular hard drive.

so you have to plug the enclosure into a wall socket, like a normal plug?

or does it require and actual external PSU.

Yeah, the enclosures come with an external AC adapter (like laptop bricks, but smaller), which you connect to a power source.

Also, there are enclosures that don't use any external AC adapters, but can get power by using 2 USB ports (1 for drive, 1 for power), and sometimes it gets enough juice by just using one...but I think only 2.5" enclosures have this capability.
