IDE to Sata on Optical CD/DVD not working

I just finished rebuilding my computer and wanted to keep using my older IDE PIONEER DVR-710 CD/DVD burner along with a new ASUS 24X Burner, which is SATA.

My new MB is a MSI B85-G41 PC Mate, and does not have the IDE header on the board, only Sata. So I moseyed on down to Fry's and bought a VANTEC IDE to SATA adapter. (CB-IS100)

I changed the Jumper to SLAVE (2nd from right) ...And plugged the adapter into the back, along with the SATA power cable and the 4 pin connector. powered it on and nothing happens!

There is also a bigger 4 pin Molex males, but I called VANTEC and he told me not to plug them in.

So this was a pretty reliable drive in my last rig, and I would hate to have to go buy another sata optical drive.

When it was all plugged in, I went to the bios and it didn't show up there. What I did not do was to go to the Device manager and look to see if there were any conflicts.

And speaking of the new SATA ASUS writer, Are these any good? Earlier I went to insert a GPU software CD, and nothing happened. I had to go into MY COMPUTER and click some things until I saw that OPEN FILES, VIEW FILES, Etc.

Thanks!

Also, many IDE controller cards don't play well with ODDs, either. In general, ODDs seem to get forgotten about by manufacturers who make these sorts of things.

The Rosewill dual-port PCI IDE RAID controller card with the SI / CMD 0680 chipset will work with opticals if flashed with the "base" BIOS, I believe.

Two things seem wrong in OP's post.

1. The adapter itself does not have a way to set a jumper. BUT you MUST set the jumper on the IDE device to the MASTER setting - it says so in the adapter's manual! This adapter creates a sort of IDE port from a SATA port, and every IDE port MUST have at Master device on it to work. That is why your HDD's jumper must be set this way.

2. I'm not clear what Vantec told you about power cables. The instructions clearly show a power cable included that has three connectors on it:
(a) one is a 4-pin Molex male that is connected to the power source, a 4-pin Molex female from the PSU;
(b) one is a 4-pin Molex female output that must connect to the IDE device to provide power to it; and,
(c) the third is a non-standard connector that must be plugged into a mating one on the adapter to provide power to it.

There is a lot of confusion around Master and Slave for drives. For starters, this issue concerns ONLY IDE devices - no others. Then, understand that the two terms are relevant only to the devices attached to ONE IDE port. An IDE port can support up to two devices, but they must be individually distinguished somehow. The way is to set the first to be the port's Master; IF there is a second, then it must be the Slave. However, these settings and terms refer ONLY to the devices attached to this particular IDE port. If there is a second IDE port, it has its own completely separate Master (and possibly Slave) devices. There is no such thing as a Master Drive for the entire computer. There IS a Boot Device (there could even be more than one), and then there are other non-boot (data) devices, but none of these latter is a Slave to anything!

Paperdoc's got it. When in doubt, read the manual instead of heading to a forum or calling Krustumer Serbiz. :)

Some of these ribbon cables want the master and slave in specific locations.

I think it is a giant waste of time using any IDE Drive.

I'm curious, do you burn that many CDs/DVDs? I use to a lot back in the day for backups, but given how cheap flash drives are hard drives are, then there's free cloud space as well, I rarely burn discs anymore.

Also IDE is not the same as ATAPI. They are used interchangeably but they are not the same. Some IDE controller does not support ATAPI even though it uses the 40 pin interface.. thats why you get all those IDE raid controller that you can't plug an optical drive into

IDE is how hard drives, CD-ROMs, etc. interface with your computer. ATAPI is a tunneling protocol (works inside of IDE) that enables Windows to control CD-ROMs and tape drives. ATAPI is NOT used for hard drives. Both are used for CD-ROMs and tape drives.

ATAPI
(AT Attachment Packet Interface) The specification for IDE tape drives and CD-ROMs. See IDE.

All IDE ribbon cables want the master and slave in specific locations. The master goes at the end and the slave goes in the middle. However, that's not terribly relevant here because the OP doesn't have an IDE cable.
