IDE to SATA Converter

I'm about to upgrade my old system to one of the new Nforce590 SLI mobos with Raptor 150GB etc...

My question relates to the fact that I've got a Western Digital 250GB IDE PATA drive full of purely data files that I want to connect to the new mobo, which only has one IDE connector (I'm going to use this for my DVD & CD drives) and I understand that I'm going to need an IDE to SATA converter.

I've had a good look through ebay and via google and there seems to be several similar small devices for sale, but I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this type of device, good or bad?

I read a review which gives the impression that performance will IMPROVE if you connect an old IDE to a SATA connector!

I've been using a few old Abit ones for a few of my IDE hard drives for a while now...they work just fine, I havent noticed any difference in performance either way.

I've had a couple of the Syba ones... and they've been problem free.

As far as performance, a couple of sites say you might eat less cpu cycles or whatever but it's nothing noticeable.

I remember when Seagate had the only true SATA drive out there and everyone else was using bridge, i think this is basically the same thing.

Performance difference is not readily apparent in normal day-to-day operations. As far as most users go, a converted PATA to SATA is just another drive on a different controller.

I didn't know that Abit made this converter?

I don't know if they ever sold them by themselves or if they even still make them. I got them with a motherboard a few years back...

Typically those work just fine. I had good luck with the Highpoint RocketRAID converters.

Like others have said, most of the original "SATA" drives were nothing more than PATA drives with the SATA-PATA converters built in to the drive's board. And, many of the original SATA cards were the same - PATA controller with converter chips.

Abit made Serillel2 one that generally works

I think mine's defective though :( I keep getting BAD_POOL_CALLER and stuff with it
