IDE: "single or master" vs "master with slave present"?

I have a WD IDE drive with two distinct jumper settings that appear to be the same:

* single or master
* master with slave present

What's the difference?

first is for one drive in the cable
and the second is for having the disk as master but also having a device in the cable.

I'm using it as "single or master" with a slave. If it were for a single drive only I don't think they'd add the "or master" bit.

Upon more reflection I have a theory: maybe the second option fails without a slave, as a sort of sanity check for the slave.

The other option is to use Cable Select (CSEL). They say single or master becasuse we are approaching a time when some younger users don't know what a master is. It is the same as single.
