IDE Ribbon to SATA adapter?

I've heard this adapter is the only way to connect an old IDE Ribbon HDD to a SATA HDD, but I've also heard this adapter has caused problems from a few friends of mine who are currently at NMT (New Mexico Tech).

I was hoping to get some input from people here on whether or not this is a reliable adapter, if there are better ones out there, or if there are better methods of file transfer between an old IDE HDD to my new SATA HDD.

I'll be going out of town for a few days, so if I do reply, it will be from my phone and probably pretty short since I absolutely hate using my phone as a keyboard.
 
easier way would be USB enclosure that takes IDE drives. I have ABIT Serillel 2 that was quite reliable, but that one is no longer on market.
 
for around the same price or slightly more than that adapter you can get a controller card that you can connect 2 drives to and will have the option of raiding them if you want.

This $5 bidirectional adapter also uses a Jmicron chip (picture is inaccurate) and is bidirectional and seems to work with all hard and optical drives:

If you do, I recommend getting the USB 3.0 version sold by various companies, cheapest is usually Rosewill (Newegg house brand). It's way faster than USB 2.0 and doesn't cost much more.
