IDE RAID vs. SCSI U2W standalone?

I'm running out of HDD space so I'm up and looking for a HDD.

There's a AHA-2940U2W in my system now, with a Cheetah 4.5GB LVD.

There are 2 options i'm looking at:
1. setup a IDE RAID
2. buy a 18gb U2W 10k RPM (or a U160 for future controller upgrade)

what do you guys think? will the IDE RAID setup give me performance gains over the Ultra2?
 
The only thing an IDE RAID setup is going to give you is faster transfer rates. I would stick with a 10K SCSI drive like you are looking at. SCSI is going to give you better access times, lower CPU usage, better multitasking, and IMO a more reliable drive.
 
i agree. the u2w controller is still a good one and a fast 10k or 15k scsi will outperform an ide raid setup except maybe peak transfer rates. overall your system will be faster. boy, if you're used to a 4.5gb scsi will you be impressed with a 10k cheetah or quantum atlas III.
