My computer was running great until I recently added a new IDE controller and hard drive. I originally had a IDE Raid card (Silicon Image SiI 0680 Ultra-133 Medley ATA Raid Controller) hooked up to twin WD 120's. I just purchased a Maxtor 160 which included its own IDE controller in the box (WinXP Promise Ultra133 TX2 IDE Controller).
When I first installed it, it was placed in a PCI slot closer to the processor than my original RAID card. This caused problems because the bios tried to boot off of the new card instead of the RAID card. I moved it down a slot (Raid in slot 2, IDE in slot 3) and everything seemed peachy. It booted into windows fine, and installed the drivers for the card fine. When I first tried formatting the drive is when I ran into problems. The first two times, I tried formatting with NTFS, the computer froze up. I finally got it to work by formatting in safe mode. I can now see the drive and use it more or less like normal, I now have major lockup problems with XP. I was having no reliability problems with explorer before the new install, but now it seems that explorer will hang almost immediately after everything loads.
When I unplug the power to the new drive, windows no longer freezes up.
I suspect that there is some kinda DMA, bus mastering or IRQ conflicts goin on on the PCI bus between the RAID card and the IDE card. The new maxtor IDE card does say IDE Bus Mastering on when it boots, and the manual suggests that the card be in the first three PCI slots closest to the proc.
Any Ideas? I'm about to ditch the card, and just hook it up as slave with my CDROM on my motherboard IDE channel.
