IDE Questions

Now that my rig is up and running, I'm wondering if I set up the IDE devices in the best way possible. I have one HD, a DVD-ROM, and a CD-RW drive. I put the HD on the primary IDE channel by itself, and put the DVD & CD-RW on the secondary with the CD-RW set as slave. Is this going to give me the best performance, or is there a better way to set them up?

If you're going to be burning from a CD or whatever in the DVD drive, then you might run into porblems (I know some have) because those are both on the same channel. I think you should put your hard drive and DVD drive together if you will be burning from CD to CD a lot. If you copy the CD to the hard drive and then copy from the hard drive to the CD-RW, then you could put the DVD and CD-RW on the same channel.

yeah Nero doesn't like if you put drives in the same channel and burn on the fly...but my GF has burnproof and she does it anyway.

I would suggest that you separate the CD-ROM devices as well. I would put the DVD-ROM as primary slave and put the CD-RW as secondary Master. If a second hard drive were added later that would go in the secondary slave spot. This allows for ideal burning from both the existing hard drive and the DVD-ROM. If you rip a lot of DVDs to your hard drive, then I might leave it the way you have it now.

For the few disks I've copied so far, I've done a disk image first -- but once I'm confident that the burner works alright (got a couple power calibration errors at 12x, need to see if it's the media or the burner) I'll probably copy directly, at which point it'll be time for an IDE switch.
