IDE-LED

Hi

I have four IDE-harddrives working in my PC and want to add an activity-LED for each one. Does anyone know how to do this?
I've already tried some circuits I made myself but they always only work when just one harddrive is connected to the IDE-cable. My main-problem ishe "slave present" signal at boottime - does it go from slave to master or the other way around or both ways?

It would be great if someone could help me, because I've searched countless sites for that topic.

Each of the hard drives which you want to monitor activity for should have IDE-LED connector. Just connect LED to that connector and place the LED where you want it to see and you'll be all set. Keep in mind though that not all hard drivers have that IDE-LED connector. In my situation IBM SCSI hard drive has that connector, while Maxtor and WD don't have it.

That's exactly my problem - none of my drives have that connector (neither does any modern IDE-drive I know). That is why I want to make my own circuit - I tried to follow the wiring of a mobile rack but I couldn't quite follow the wiring.

Also, if you really want to have these LEDs so much, you can just buy 4 cheap IDE controllers and connect each hard drive to one of the controllers. That way you can connect LED to each controller. Perhaps that's not the best solution, but it certainly will not void your hard drive's warranty by trying to open it and wire connectors the way you want it.

Look....you don't have to open the hard drive to get to the connector.....one of the wires in the ide cable carries the signal...easy to get to. I forget which wire it is, maybe somebody knows.

The LED pins on your SCSI drive are for the SCSI card hookups aren't they?

Either SCSI card or LED. I have my connected to LED (suspend LED, since I have no use for that LED anyway. On Asus motherboards while computer is in standby power LED blinks). Everything seems to work pretty good so far.

cable 39 is carrying the LED-signal.
The Led is working when you connect it with cable 39 and 5V. The problem is, that both drives have to "communicate" during the boot process in order to identify the slave correctly (the slave present signal).
It's a problem because I haven't found a way yet to keep each drive from lighting both LEDs while being able to talk to the other drive.
I also don't want four controllers because I don't have unlimited space in my computer and I want to use UDMA.
