IDE IRQ conflict - how to resolve?

I have a possible IRQ conflict with an IDE slot (on HPT370 ATA 100 controller) and an "ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering". I've tried assigning a different IRQ resource for the ACPI IRQ......., but device manager won't let me move either the IDE (HPT370 is integral to the Mainboard) IRQ or the ACPI device. I believe this is a resource problem of some type because of these symptons: during big disk writes on the IDE slot, the system freezes, especially during backups to this drive of 2GB and greater. The disk registers perfectly in BIOS and Windows. All diagnostics tell me the disk is without errors. I've checked the cable connections and disk jumpers - all in order.

How can I resolve this problem? I know that resource settings other than IRQ assignments can be changed, but I have no idea what settings to use. My terminology may be off here - is it possible to change the memory addresses to resolve this problem? Is there a backdoor or BIOS means to move the ACPI... to another IRQ?

Thanks for the advice, in advance.

If all you have on that IRQ is "PCI Steering" and the Highpoint controller, then look somewhere else for your problem. They are supposed to be together.

What OS are you using and do you have the latest drivers for your HPT370?

The Highpoint BIOS is 1.0.3b1. Drivers are win9x103b.exe. OS is Win98 FE w/all updates offered by Windows Update. This is really strange. I am operating the drive presently on the KT7's ATA 66 IDE controller 1. It works perfectly and very fast on that connection. It just won't burst at ATA 100 (I've analyzed it on Sandra). It will work for a while on the ATA 100 controllers, but freezes after about 1 - 1 1/2 GB of writes. Oh well, any suggestions would be appreciated. I've already got all my data backed up elsewhere, so I am game to try anything with this HDD.
