I just built a new P4 system with Asus P4T-E, Plextor 24/10/40A and Pioneer DVD-116.
According to Asus MB User's Manual, I should connect HDD to IDE-1 and all other non-ultraDMA/100 devices to IDE-2. This means that I should install both Plextor 24/10/40A and Pioneer DVD-116 to IDE-2. This is my current configuration, it doesn't work so good.

According to Plextor manual, HDD and DVD should be installed in IDE-1 and Plextor as IDE-2 alone.

What should I do? If I put the HDD and DVD in IDE-1, is there a problem to use the 40-pin, 80 conductor IDE-cable for the DVD drive?:)

There should be no problem. However, you should have the HDD (especially if its ATA/100 or ATA/133) on its own on channel 1.

The best setup I have found is: IDE1: HDD (and possibly another HDD if you have one :)) IDE2: Master-DVD , Slave-Burner

Although Plextor "recommends" it be alone on its own channel, thats a load of crap - it only needs a constand 3.6 MB/s of bandwidth to burn at 24X!!! They're being a little careful there (on slower, older systems DVD and CD-RW drives do sometimes need to be masters because slow machines can't keep them fed with data constantly). I'm running a 24X TEAC as a slave to a DVD (and mine only has a 2 MB buffer whereas yours is either 4MB or 8MB) with zero problems, ever!

DVD drives on the other hand are sometimes picky and like to be masters. If you read your DVD drive manual (if it comes with one) it usually recommends it be on its own as a master on a separate channel as well!!

I'm not sure what you mean by "not working so well" together. Are you sure they are set up properly with jumpers as master/slave? Also, if performace is not up to snuff, put the "master" on the END of the cable, and the "slave" on the middle of the cable as this can cause problems.

Hope this helps.

I have a map software "Microsoft Streets and Trips". It consists of a SETUP cd and a RUN CD. I did the installation using the SETUP CD. When I run the software, it asks me for the RUN cd. I put in the RUN CD (in DVD and then CD-RW), it doesn't see it.

When I go to Windows Explorer, it can see all the files in the CD. Both the SETUP and RUN cd are 700 MG. If I can open it in Windows Explorer, why can't I run it?

I have no problem in another PC. As a matter of fact, I only have to put in the RUN cd, it will automatically execute the program.
