IDE Hot Swap carriages....?

Hi, I'm looking at picking up some ide hot swap carriages to fit into my 5.25" bays. 3 to be exact. I'm not really looking for the functionality of hot swap but wouldn't mind being able to hot swap, mostly want the fact they look cool, have cooling capabilities, and allow me to fill my 5.25 bays that are unused. Do you need a certain raid card to be able to hot swap or will any regular one work? I am planning on having a raid 5 array with 3 drives. I have seen a cheap hotswap carriage at computergeeks.com for only like 6.99 which seems good, I have also seen a 3ware ata drive cage that looks awesome (but I can't find it for sale anywhere) http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7415 . I have also seen a few for sale on ebay for 6.99 or so and I've seen Antec brand ones. Anybody have any experience with any of these ones I listed or have any suggestions? Thanks.

Wow..those are really cheap...are you sure they're really hot-swap? I just bought 2 of these link which are pricey but they convert 2 5.25" bays to 3 3.5" hot swap IDE bays, which is what I needed (I have drives and not enough bays for the drives plus CD, backup, etc.). Promise makes something called the Superswap (I think) which is a hot-swap enclosue with built-in LCD and fans, and Vantec has some also I believe. I'd be interested in seeing some of the ones you saw on eBay.

As far as RAID cards, I think it needs to be able to support hot-swap, but most of the add-in cards do (as far as I know).

I wonder if those cheap ones really do allow hot-swapping, or if they just say they do? Don't know. Yeah, unfortunately I paid what is listed on that site, it was the only place I could find them. The guys at that company were nice, though, they were out of stock and had a pair of them air-mailed from Taiwan (or somewhere) and didn't even charge me shipping.

they have a ton of them over at newegg. i just found them, specially like this one,

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=43&manufactory=1375&DEPA=1

it's the 2nd one from bottom, its black, looks nice, don't know if its hot swap but i dont really care about that.

this one is also really nice, the last one,

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=43&manufactory=1633&DEPA=1

even more,

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=43&manufactory=1453&DEPA=1

I can't decide, I really want black ones so that kinda limits me, still want the one you bought though 🙂.

This is actually the same as the Vantec one I mentioned (at least it looks exactly the same), although the Vantec doesn't mention hot-swapping, but this is a nice bay.

As far as the ones I have, I like them too, but cooling has become a major issue. All of a sudden, I have 6 7200RPM drives sitting on top of one another with no space in between, and no capability of a fan blowing in. I'm wishing I would have gotten 6 of the ones above, and a different tower.

yeah that is pretty nice, now that you mention it i bet your hdd do get really got, suprised they don't put a fan in there or something mounted vertically on the side of the drives or something to keep em cool, 3 drives in such a small space has to be torture on them if they're 7,200rpm+

I've got a lian-li rh600 and love it. it's all aluminum, available in scsi or ide, 2 fans with filters. very nice.

I have it in a VERY cold air-conditioned room, and the drive cage is HOT to the touch, not just warm. I'm actually considering dumping these cages in favor of the individual ones with fans (like the Vantec clones). Of course, then I have $350 worth of hot-swap cages just lying around. Oh well.
