IDE hard drive question

Hullo!

Question. My old Dell Precision 220 has a single Ide Hard drive, and two 900 MHZ cpu's. Everything works fine. I wanted to try one of the new SSD's in it, clone the old drive to the SSD, and go on computing.

I forgot about the Master Slave IDE thing though, so I need a little memory refresh. I suppose I should make the old drive the Master and the new one the Slave; but maybe not? Two Masters? Two Slaves? Where's Ben Hur when you need him.....

You can find several 44 pin PATA SSD drives at Newegg.
Just toss in a 40-pin to 44-pin adapter and you're in business.

as a matter of fact i had looked for IDE SSDs in the past and couldn't find any that I would feel comfortable using, bunch of transcend and supertalent GARBAGE. There were some hella expensive samsung models that were reliable but slow

whether I had just missed it or it's new, the OWC Legacy model with a real sandforce controller is the first decent ide ssd i've seen, congrats on finding it

This is the third one I've played with. The first was a SATA model installed in a Mac G5 that acts as a gateway to four external hard drives. Instal was painless, the clone program worked perfectly; it works fast and steady every day.

The second SATA model went into a Dell T3400. Motherboard issues caused the project to be shelved. i've been looking at T3500's.

I got the IDE model installed in "Old Nell Dell" this am. Came with the wiring harness, a converter circuit board, and converter brackets. Fit perfectly. Set the old drive to Master and the SSD to Slave. Buttoned it up. After we ran the wizard the drive appeared in the window with the old one. Next to clone the old drive.

The folks at OWC are awesome. Got some help from a tech this morning who still remembered her stuff from Win 2000 days! I should have such a memory.

I should say congrats, but I feel like you're going to be really CPU limited now (as opposed to mostly CPU limited).

The machine runs quick books, and carries about 20 gig of data. I really should be saying that it has done that for 12 years now. The dual 900mhz cpu's won't break a sweat, and the SSD should go for years.
