IDE detected as SCSI

I tried searching for this but i guess i didn't use the right keywords ...
System:
OS: XP pro
abitkt7raid
duron 600@1ghz
maxtor 30gb 7200rpm
sblive/geforce256/logitechoptical/
LMK if anything else is needed...

Problem:
My ide drive is being detected as scsi in device manager.
I don't know how to change it to ide.

I am thinking that this is the reason why my xp os is lagging ... because dma is not enabled

any advice would be appreciated ...

thanks

You're connected to the highpoint onboard raid controller, switch your ide cable to your other ide connectors on your board.

thanks for the reply guys!

yeah... i'm connected to the raid ide channel..but it's the only one that supports ata100 ...
so does this mean that my drive doesn't have to have dma enabled?

if it doesn't than i have no idea why the system is running so slow...

A lot of add on IDE controllers show up in the device manager as SCSI adapters, it should not effect performance.

well ... it's onboard raid ...

and i'm wondering if dma is not enabled will affect the drive performance...

or is it that all drives on raid read as scsi and therfore do not need dma?

i checked the primary and secondary ide channel in device manager
and it says dma mode is not applicable ... so i'm assuming it's disabled...

LMK if i'm wrong ...

Thanks

Highpoint is total crap, unless you really want to use it for Raid i suggest you use the onboard IDe controller,Even if it's ata66 you will not notice any difference, in fact it might be faster. 🙂

Well, The primary and secondary channel are your regular IDE channel, but your HD is not on it.
You probably find it on CMOS or startup screen.

Right now it's not applicable because there are no devices connected to the via onboard ide, connect you stuff to it,then & you'll be able to enable DMA. 🙂

Huh?

Oh so the 2 ide ata100 onboard channel are NOT part of the via ide channels?

I thought they were...

thanks for the reply bluesky ... i'll look for the dma stuff at boot up ..
so are you sure it's better to just use the other ide channels? I always thought that they were only ata33 since the manual only states that ide 3 and 4 are ata100 ... but than again it didn't say that ide 1 and 2 are only ata33

if it's ata66 that would be ok ...
i'll take your word for it budman

thanks people!!

Yes, it will at least be ATA66, which should provide no noticeable performance decrease. The IDE RAID controller is separate from the VIA controller in the southbridge. There should be a Highpoint or Promise controller chip somewhere on your motherboard.

well .. none of that is the reason .. its not the reason you are lagging either, this is very normal, you are using ata100 controllers, win9x/2k/xp sometimes/generally detect the "ata100 highspeed" interface as scsi, this is not a big deal, its very normal .. as long as ur hpt bios detects it and says "udma 5" or u can use sandra and check the drive, its running in udma5 ... hope this helps .. good luck ..
