IDE controller went bad, need a little help

Ok, just one day all of the sudden my computer would stop booting on the Windows screen and lock up. So after a while in safe mode, I started disabling all the hardware and narrowed it down to the IDE controller that my two cd drives are on. I disabled that and it runs fine now. But, is it possible to transfer just one of these drives into a different controller, say that the hard drive is connected to? I would imagine it is possible, but I don't want to mess with anything until I know for sure. I can't help you on the mobo, its one from Compaq. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

You should be able to plug it into the other controller without any problems, but if you want to use all the drives, just pick up a udma 100 controller ($50, look at one made by promise), it will give you an additional 4 ide ports, and will fit in a pci slot.
