I have a gateway P3-450 (to give you an idea of vintage). It's mobo only supports ata33, but they wanted the bragging rights of an ata66 HD (it was just out at the time) so they put in a controller card. It's set up with the HD running off this card and a DVD off the mobo (not sure whether primary or secondary) Anyway, I'd like to steal the controller for use in another computer. If I just hooked the HD up as primary master and DVD as 2nd master, would everything still work without reinstalling everything? How much performance hit would it see? This computer is used mostly for big excel files, internet, but not gaming.

You should be able to with no problems, doubt if you'd even notice a performance decrease with it gone, you might have to go into BIOS and change the boot sequence..probably a good idea to boot in safe mode and remove the controller device as well or uninstall drivers for it...hope all goes well.
