IDE Configuration with Promise Controller Card?

Hey all,

I'm still stuck with my 250 Gig Pata drives so I thought I would use a controller card to get some better performance (possibly). My question is this:

Should I connect both hard drives to the mainboard... meaning my system drive in IDE channel 1 and the other 1 in channel 2... meaning both DVD drives would be on the card.

OR

should I connect my system drive on channel 1 and my primary DVD Burner on IDE 2...
Then my other HD and Burner on the card?

Does it even matter? Thanks for the help

It probably wont matter really. It would probably be easier to route the cables if you kept similar devices close to each other. Also if the card only has one port, if you put say your hard drive and dvd burner on one cable into the one port, it will only go at the slowest speed out of hte 2 devices. Preformance on the card vs on the mainboard will be too close to notice a difference, unless you have a ton of PCI cards.

Keep in mind that on many of the controller cards, you cannot boot from optical...so, I'd leave at least 1 optical attached to the motherboard.

Okie,

I've decided to leave one optical connected to the mainboard, just like Chucky suggested... mainly for the need to boot from it through my bios, good point!

It seems to be working nicely, thanks for the suggestions!
