What is the general setup for IDE Channels when you have a Burner, DVD, and one or 2 harddrives (ATA100)? (what goes on what channel and which mode master/slave/CS)

Thanks

Ultimately I would get a promise controller and let them all be on their own channel...

But in your configuration:

Primary Master: 1st HDD
Primary Slave: DVD-rom
Secondary master: 2nd HDD
Secondary Slave: CD-RW

whY?

My reason is that it is best to have the HDD's as masters and keep dvd-rom separate of CD-RW so your option of on the fly cd-copying is available without a hitch. Faster drives masters...my moto at least.

My config

ATA100 Controller
Primary Master: 45gig HDD
Secondary Mater: 15gig HDD

MOBO ATA66 IDE
Primary Master: Kenwood CD-ROM
Primary Slave: NEC ZIP Drive
Secondary Master: CD-RW
Secondary Slave: DVD-ROM

I put my DVD-rom as slave to CD-RW cause I never do on-the fly copying with it do to its slow cd-reading and dae reading times.

the master is faster than the slave setting?

i always thought that they were about the same

and to think about it if you set both on cable select and have the system find the os can you boot off the slave or the second channel?

is the primary faster than the secondary channel?

I dont think the primary is faster than the secondary. I think the only difference is the primary will boot. From what i read if you do a lot of copying from one device to another or if you want to do on the fly burning then you want those 2 devices on separate channels.

Does anyone know more about the differences between Master and Slave?

my setup

Primary Master: Hard Drive
Primary Slave: DVD-Rom
Secondary master: CD-Rom
Secondary Slave: CD-RW

1st IDE cable
-CD-Rom
|
|
-CD-RW
|
|

2nd Cable
-DVD-Rom
|
|
-Hard Drive
|
|

hope that makes some sense

i dont want my CD-Rom on the same cable as my HD b/c installing would have a 2 way transfer back and forth on the same cable... same with imaging a burn...

if you put the HD and CD/DVD together on the same channel, it will only go at ATA33...

how about buying a controller card so they're all masters? :)
