ide cables

i'm using an ata 100 drive but my ide cable is labeled ata 66 (drive is oem, didn't come with its own)... will this make a difference in hd performance? supposedly a worker at best buy told me i needed to get a ide cable thats able to handle ata 100, but i think he was just trying to get me to shell out 20 bucks for the thing. (best buy had 2 different ide cables, one that was 8 bucks and the other that was 20). so do i really need a ide cable that says ata 100 compatible or what not on it or is my ata 66 labeled ide cable just fine? thanks for any imput.

You'll be just fine. All 80-wire cables are the same 😀

The ATA66 vs. ATA100 rating is just to get more money out of people who don't know any better. Just like the USB 1.1 vs. USB 2 cables. Both cables are exactlly the same, its just the label on the box that has changed.

hehehe k there's 2 types of cables AND NO MORE...

30 pin and 80 pin

30 pin = ata33
80 pin = ata66, ata100, ata133...

that's is all....just rip off the ata66 tag if it bothers ya.....and that worker is right..just don't use 30 pins cables..hehehehe

hope that put u @ ease...

and welcome to anandtech forums woooooosh

Let me correct you a bit....

There are 2 types of IDE cable.

80 wire, 40 pin

40 wire, 40 pin

ATA66 and above REQUIRE the use of 80-wire, 40 pin cables. Motherboards and drives can detect which type they are using, if they do not detect a 80-wire cable they will fall back to ATA33.

ATA33 and below will work with both types of cable.
