ide cables safest length??

A previous post brought this to mind: I have a full tower case and I'm always having trouble fitting cables to the mobo for my ide drives. I want to get use out of the bays in the upper 1/3 of my case but I'm always running short. What max length is safe to use for a drive? 18"? 24"? or 36" too long?

Do you really lose data integrity on longer cables? I am not giving up my full tower so that's out of the question, but I'm just curious cause I have bays above the power supply that I can't even use but would like to.

According to the spec, the max length for 40 conductor ATA33 cables is 24" and for 80 conductor ATA66/100 it's 18". For what it's worth, I'm using 36" ATA33 cables and 24" ATA66/100 cables right now in my rig without any problems and I even have a 686b southbridge + SoundBlaster Live! 😛. A lot of people with full towers use longer cables; you shouldn't have any problems.
