ide cables and cd-rom

Does anyone know if you can use an 80-wire ultra ide cable for cd-roms/dvd's, or are you stricly limited to 40-wires? I know, stupid question, but I have a tall server tower with a Tyan Tiger board, and the cd's are at the top and the ide ports are at the very bottom of the tiger. How do I deal with this? I have a long ide-ultra cable, but can't find a "normal" one that has this length. Are there female-female adaptors that can be used to connect 2 40-wire ide cables?
