IDE cable queston

My question is can you plug the master side in the drive and the slave part on the motherboard in stead using the whole thing.

(IE) I want to cut off the long end and just use the slave to connnect to the motherboard. Will this work right or will I have problems with data coruption or something else.

I dont see why u would want to! Just leave how is and use the master!

Well I really just want to shorten my cable up, see my HD is right on top of the motherbord IDE connection and I was just looking to make the cable shorter by using the Master side to the drive and the slave side to the motherboard.
