IDE cable question....too short between master & slave

This may be a stupid question, so go easy on me...

I have a CDRW and HD that share my primary IDE connection. The master and slave connectors on all of my IDE cables are about 5 inches apart. My CDRW and HD are about 8-9 inches apart and I can't get them any closer.

What do I need?

<< Longer cables. >>

Wow, thanks!

Nope...can't rearrange them to be any closer.

This is an 18" cable (standard, I guess). It's the "blue connector" with the smaller wires...what is this for and what's it called?

Anyway, do the longer (24") cables have a longer spread between connectors?

i may just be in the minority on this, but i have one cable where the slave connector is about in the middle. i dunno if they're usually varied like that.

Since you have slaved the CDRW to the hard drive try using a regular IDE cable (you have lost the benefit of ATA100 anyway) and as long as your HD is less than 5" from the IDE connector you'll be fine. In other words, connect to cable the opposite way around.

I had a similar problem. I however could move the drives around. I also ordered new cables (needed to anyhow) and the newer, longer cables seemed to have more space between the connectors.

If its too weird of config you may need to have someone with a cable press custom make some cables.
