I just received a drive from dell, it came with a cable that I think is faulty, but I just want to confirm. It has a chunk missing from an individual wire near the motherboard connector...I have a picture of it here.

<< And if I have only one drive? >>

it doesn't really matter which one you put it on these days. I'd suggest sticking it on the first connector in the line if you only have a single drive

It does make a difference if he's got an ata66/100 drive,if he doesnt use the correct way, blue=board, grey=slave, black=master then the drive will default to ata33.

hmmm..i'm not so sure about that. I know that the blue needs to go to the board...but I was under the impression that it didn't matter which connector the master/slave went on. Wonder if we can find some links that talk about it....

well , it would be the master..so it should therefore go to black

Umm, no, you are wrong. It makes no diff. The only reason you put the blue on at the board, is because more of the connectors are at the other end

I was trying to ask, but I was on a mac so I messed up, was in a single drive set up, the drive is considered a master, even though you set the jumper to "single drive?"

yeah, if it's set to single drive, that's effectively "master" , so stick with the black connector

What is UDMA 5, I mean what speed is that in ATA? I didn't realize that it made a differance were you connect them on the cable, this was news to me. But when I had mine setup it was running UDMA5, but I was getting slightly poor performance, and I don't recall were is was connected at that time. So if UDMA5 is anything less then ATA100, then that wouls show me my problem.

Where comes the rule grey goes to slave & black goes to master? I've never heard of this b4. I think it's solely dependents on the jumper siting on the harddisk.
For the case you have only one HD, you can use the master jumper siting in most cases. But for some HDs such as a 4G WD I have, there is a special jumper siting when it's the only HD on the cable.

if you follow the link Budman posted above , it DOES clearly state the color order that should be followed for ata100 drives

although i'm still NOT 100% convinced that it's true...at least it's a link from a reputable site....so it can't hurt to follow those suggestions

and yes, the "single drive" jumper setting can be found on many drives...but it effectively makes it a master
