Going back to the network effect, if android gets like 80%+ marketshare, you will damn well care about who sells more because the market will drag developers, kick and screaming, to develop more for android than for ioS. That's the same reason why i can run a helluva lot more software on my PC than a mac user can on his mac.

I don't know if they'll get 80% though. They haven't done it in mobile phones and they've been dominating in that space. Also, if the average Android user doesn't buy apps or isn't willing to spend as much money, it doesn't matter how much market share they have.

Another important statistic to look at would be market share in the U.S. and Europe. They developers there are going to be producing most of the apps that people in the West are going to use, and the proportions of iOS/Android in those countries are much closer than in countries like China or India where Apple doesn't have as large of a presence.

I dunno about that. Samsungs market share alone in smartphones is higher than Apples in Western Europe.

The only thing I don't like about trying to pull market share is that most studies leave out iPod Touch an iPad sales. These are markets Apple is absolutely killing in, but they never seem to be reflected in comparisons.

And it's lower in the U.S. I'm merely pointing out that in the areas where most developers are located and are making the best apps, there's not as large of a gulf between iOS and Android in absolute terms like there is in China or India.

On another note, I'm somewhat surprised that Nokia is still selling that well in Europe.

The iPod probably doesn't make that large of a dent. First, they're a fraction of what the iPhone does, and second, I think historically Apple has said only around half of iPod sales are iPod touches.

Well according to the Q1 2013 earnings call, Apple sold 48m iPhones, 23m iPads and almost 13m iPods. If we presume that half of those are Touch's, then that's almost 7m, right? That means Apple sold 30m non-iPhone iOS devices in addition to the 48m iPhones. I mean, I just increased iOS's market share for the quarter by 60%, right?

As a Android 5" phone user I don't see the appeal Android tablets at all, especially when I can't get N7/10 at Play Store prices.

FYI, Apple Q1 2013 was from October to December 2012. Its recent (second) quarter was from January to March 2013.
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2013/04/23Apple-Reports-Second-Quarter-Results.html

The Company sold 37.4 million iPhones in the quarter, compared to 35.1 million in the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold 19.5 million iPads during the quarter, compared to 11.8 million in the year-ago quarter. The Company sold just under 4 million Macs, compared to 4 million in the year-ago quarter.
And only 5.6 million of Ipods sold according to this report.
Meanwhile, the iPod continued its steady decline, moving only 5.6 million units.

You're right, sorry. I spaced and forgot new numbers were out. But using the same assumption with iPod touches, wouldn't Q2 2013 increase still by 60%. 37m iPhones + 23m non iPhone iOS device.

I mean, we're talking ecosystems here right? Should we just ignore the other 60% iOS devices sold? Should we ignore whatever percentage of Android tablets with access to Google's ecosystem get sold? Shouldn't we exclude Kindle and Nook devices (Nook devices prior to last week, anyways) from Android numbers and label them appropriately since they're not (or weren't, in Nook's case) in Google's ecosystem?
