id Tech 5 Demo Vid

I heard that yer gonna need 2 next generation GeForce 9800 GTXs in SLI or 2 DAAMIT Radeon HD 3900XTs in CF to be able to pull down 113 frames a second average at 1600x1200 with 4x AA and 16x AF.

from the looks, the engine doesn't look that different. That is most likely because of the low res screens and video rip offs, but I'm sure Carrmack's got it well optimized.
I wonder what sort of FPS he'll make.

Looks like DIII revamped, at least with the low quality video we've seen. I'm sure it'll be fine once it is completed.

I think the point he was making is this engine will allow the level designers to put a TON of texture data in a level without being limited to how much RAM the video card and system had. He said there was 20 gigs of texture data in that level, so I assume the engine dynamically loads textures on the fly. This won't make any single part of a level more impressive, but it will make levels more varied, since the designers won't have to keep using the same textures over and over again in a level.

Another point was that the engine was rendering this stuff out in the open, showing off the sky, and the whole modability feature taken exponentially.

And who the hell will be using 4:3 resolutions that far in the future?

If you're going to play forecast at least get the obvious ones right

considering that'll be what, 2 years away?
pretty sure 4:3 and 5:4 monitors will still be around. I have no clue when I am going to upgrade my monitor, a measly 17" 1280x1024 Samsung LCD (5:4). Hell, I wish I could have 4:3 over 5:4. I am quite interested in a 20.1" 16:10 LCD, but when/if I get it? who knows.

Ya, I thought the point of the technology was the ability to do drastic things, like 20GB's worth of textures, without a performance hit. At least thats what I understood.

I'm not impressed. I know technically it's great, and it looks good, "current" graphics or not, but... it doesn't do anything for me. I'm not being a hater or suffering "nerd rage" it just leaves me cold. I don't know why.
