any more input? I'm leaning heavily towards a guitar only because the price is relatively in expensive to get a starter one. However... I am going to look into the local music stores and see what their prices are for a sax rental.

trumpet. beginner trumpets are pretty cheap. and you get strong lips and incredible tongue control and dexterity. :p

What kind of music do you like? Some instruments are better suited to certain types of music than others in my opinion. If I were you, I'd pick the instrument that you like the sound of best. Pick whichever you'll enjoy listening to yourself play the most. One advantage of guitar is you can sing as you play (if you like to sing). Personally I'd vote for the trumpet, but I'm biased since I've been playing for twelve years now.

<----I am SO tired of everyone playing guitar. Seriously, everyone and their uncle seems to play the guitar. Blah.

Yeh check out rentals, and also I don't see why you have to be hell-bent on buying a Yamaha as your first sax. Now, I have a Yamaha, and sure, it's hand-over-fist better than almost any horn I've ever tried (and lighter, to boot), but if you're just starting off and just trying to figure out if you like it or not, you can get good-enough horns for $600 or less.

The recorder fingering is VERY similar to saxophone and flute, and somewhat similar to the Scottish highland pipes. I learned to play sax, and I easily adapted my skills to recorders, flutes and bagpipes. As for getting light-headed, you have to build up the endurance. Your hands will hurt and you'll get cuts and blisters when you first start playing guitar. I don't think any instrument is without a little bit of discomfort when you first start.

In all honesty, what the world needs now is some good accordion players. The squeeze box is a dying instrument, but in the hands of a skilled player, it's one of the most amazing sounding instruments you'll ever hear. And I'm not talking about playing polkas. Accordions can be a little pricey, though. If you poke around, you can find half-decent used ones for like $100.
