which FPS you guys think takes the most skill or what aspect in any FPS takes the most skill?(for example, does it take more skill to rail someone in the air in q3, or circle strafe with minigun in UT ect) Is it q2, q3a, UT, cs,doom, ect. Which one takes the highest learning curve, or the most aim or prediction skills , or the most strategy, or which one has the hardest techniques and tricks? People are always specializing in one FPS only, so i wonder which people have the better skill.

I am pretty good at quake2(instagib also) and UT but when it comes to Counterstrike i find that this game has a high learning curve, but does not take as much skill as the other games.

Quake1. Hop on any QuakeWorld server (yes, people still play) and the skill of those guys will blow you away (most of them are HPBs too)...and when QW players move to Q3A they steal the show too.

UT? bah..got bored of it.

isnt there cheating in quake 1 now bc of that release of sourcecode, or am i wrong? Is it hard to get into quake 1, or actually is it more fun than q3, cuz i know people still play it. only played q1 long time ago when i was a newbie,so i dont remember.

Doom or Descent (if you consider it FPS) take the most skill, especially if you play them after you've played Q3/UT. You need to be more accurate, instead of picking up a rocket launcher and aiming in the general direction, like in most modern FPS'es, and dodging is generally tougher since strafing is less common and more difficult, there's little mouse support, and no jumping.

If I'm not mistaken, FPS stands for First Person Shooter. Therefore, any game where you play from a first person perspective is an F-P-S game, no? :D

I have no clue which would require the most skill, but I think Descent would need quite a bit though, since you have to think about moving in each direction (up down left right front back)... You just have more to watch out for than in most other FPS games.

Yes, Descent is definitly much tougher than the standard FPS games (Quake, UT, Doom, DN3D, etc.). You have to account for moving up and down as well, and you can't manuever anywhere near as quickly. Much tougher to play.

Quake1 CTF. It takes great skill just to watch your seven other teammates and then within 2 seconds four of them go and defend the flag and three of them go to capture. All this and more without chatting or any communications, just knowing what the others will do.
I miss those times, people dont know how to play teamplay anymore :(

Probably Descent, but that never got a huge foothold. I think Quake1 is the best, it is the pure talent game, where a good fps player and a great fps player truly show who is better. Spinning shots with the shotgun are very hard to do if you dont have skill. Jump on QW, youll see.

BTW - Quake3 is lame because of AutoAim. People nail me with flying mid air rail shots that would be absolutely impossible with a sniper rifle in UT - this tells me AutoAim is owning. I cant kill anything with a railgun, and i refuse to put computer help on.

right now, im big on UT and CS - but CS is winning because i can hardly play both effectively. Too different.

It's too bad that Descent never really got popular for deathmatch. I personally would enjoy a Descent II LAN game more than a Quake LAN game. I am much more confident in my Descent skills than I am in my Quake skills.

Descent requires an amazing amount of control to truly master. I usually play with my Saitek Cyborg stick (with the rudder twist)and the trackpoint device in my IBM keyboard.

another one for Descent..

I used to be a master at descent3...but online gameplay sucks so it got REAL boring playing by myself against the bots. so..

I switched to q3 and ut. All I play is UT now because I find it more realistic and fun to play.

I tried D3 last week and I could even aim right. I've been using the mouse to aim in FPS that I've forgotten how to aim with the KB in D3 :( I might be rusty...but I do remember it took me a while to get used to the 360 degree game play.

overall descent was hard to learn, fun to play, however, it does not compare to UT when it comes down to online gaming...

that's all for now, back to UT :D

If any one of you guys have EVER played Starsiege Tribes, you guys would not be having this discussion. Tribes is THE hardest First person Shooter i have ever played. There are sooooo many things to support my claim, here's a few of them:

1. Enviorment-you're not in a small room, you're out in an endless field with lots of hills/obstructions, so splash damage only works if you shoot near the guy.

2. Real physics-when you move around they factor in your movement to your shot's trajectory. It doesnt work for fast shooting guns such as machine guns and lazers (since light and hig-velocity flacchettes are almost instant). But if you are shooting say a rocket facing the side of a transport while your moving foward, that rocket wont hit where you aim, but rather to the side of the direction you are moving. Your moving speed/force is facotered in.

3. Speed, No fps i have played have ever matched up to tribes. Everyone in tribes has a jet pack and you fly like hell. This really realy takes skill to hit a moving target that's ten times faster than running speed.

4. Realistic damage-there IS NO ARMOR in tribes, it takes only 1-2 shots to kill someone with stormhammer and 5 direct shots with a plasma weapon. You can't get armor patches. You can however choose a heavier armored player at the sacrifice of speed.

5. Gravity, Things actually speed up the longer you fall. You can use this to use a "sking" method of flying, falling off a cliff to gain speed then jet back at the last second to use that speed and turn into flying velocity.

6. Team play-you've got a team, and you;ve got to defend it by deploying turrents, mines, etc. There's also recon and info gathering with spy cameras, radar arrays, etc. There are also different classes of armor for defense, assault, recon, etc. You have to repair base installations, turrents, etc when they are destroyed. You can help artilary units aim at targets by deploying beacons, and using a targettting laser. Light armors fly transports in the air and to enemy bases while team members in heavy armor in gunery positions assault from the skies.

7. Thought- no more hardcore hull-bashing assualts, defended areas are REALLY defended, turrents and base installations have sheilding and you cant take them out without the help of a fellow player in a heavy artilary suit. You can also disable base functions if you can sneak into their base to destroy their power generators.

8. versatility, not just run and shoot anymore, there's run, jump, fall, fly, pilot starships, be a ship gunner, be a base turrent gunner, and your classic boxed-in game with in-base fights.

Tribes is the hardest fps i've everplayed, it takes so much skill and concentration to hit moving targets since a, they move sooo damn fast and b. they're usually very very far away. Tribes is real battlefield combat.

Tribes isn't tough...it's complex, but I'm a newbie (decided to try it for a few days)...yeah, I'm not the best, but I still can rank in the top 5-6 out of 24 players. Stormhammer is similar to rocket launcher in most games, and imho it takes little to no skill to kill someone with it.

I would love to play against you Pretender, let me show you what skill it takes to kill someone with a Disc launcher. When I'm in the game, I could evade discs all the time ;).

Just search for [TWS] Gladia.

(yeah, I know, its a female character, but they're just faster)
