I'd like to buy my brother a decent watch...

I'd love to buy him a beautiful timepiece as an investment, but I know it would be a waste. Still, I'd like to get him a good-quality watch. He'd like something shiny and modern.

Recommend brands? Specific watches?

Swiss Army (Victorinox) watches are not too bad for that price range. TAG's are obviously better but out of your price range.

Although I have a 10K Breitling (gift), I still wear my Swiss Army often because it is pretty rugged and looks nice.

i'm sure you watch afficionados get this all the time...but i can't imagine spending more than $100 on a watch. the purpose is to tell time and a cheap quartz watch does that job quite well.

i guess if you're involved in a business where looks and presentation are extremely important an expensive watch would be useful. of course i'd do my best to avoid any position like that.

I think $300-$500 is the worst spot to spend. I would just get a citizen or seiko at around $200, otherwise jump up to a Tag.

I don't think any new <$500 watch can be considered "investment" quality. But you might find something at an auction, however that can take a lot of searching, and time.

Yeah, you have a good point. I need a better "everyday" watch. I can't find the extra links for my Timex anymore

definitely seiko arctura, some of them are absolutely lovely with great deals online.

some citizen eco-drives are cluttered, but some just do not like chronographs. there are other eco-drives that are definitely under your price cap, and look great. i got my dad one, but that was when i worked for a citizen dealer, so i got it at cost.

you MIGHT be able to get a Tag F1 at around 550, with the rubber strap you might be able to get it under 500. the chronograph obviously costs more (at least 200.00) so these are for just their basic watches. they are quartz, so it would depend on what you wanted to get him.

I have one of those, which I got for <$100, they're actually pretty inexpensive compared to automatic watches. At least it'll still charge without wearing it unlike automatic watches. However, the battery in the watch will limit the lifetime of the watch to like 10 years or something.
