I'd like to build a Managed Switch/Router/Firewall from old parts

Howdy: I would like to know if anyone has attempted to make a managed switch/router/firewall/from older 'puter parts? I have a cable internet connection, would like to build one of these.Yes, I know...they are out there, ready for sale.

It just seems to me that I could get a bunch of N.I.C.'s,plug 'em in to the pci ports,get the software somewhere,and run the wires.

This would make a great project for a computer magazine,or group of enthusiasts.
