I'd like permission to make a FAQ!

I would like to on behalf of Anandtech.com, to make FAQ for anyone to use on how to apply thermal grease on any CPU. I used to be a total n00b at applying thermal grease and only wished there was a FAQ that told me the absolute best way to do so. I believe I can make a FAQ that everyone will get excellent results from!

I agree. Start working on a rough draft, present it to the Mods and see what their decision is.

If you can make some HTML pages with pictures, diagrams, etc. I would be more than happy to host it for free.

That's nice but also don't forget to present an open view about it.

I have been in Electronics since 1979 and have never used thermal compounds of any kind. I worked in "Burn-In" rooms putting equipment under stress for determining thermal limits, specs and MTBF.

Out of thousands of tests and hours I found no discernable difference between parts with Thermal Compound vs parts without.

I actually wipe parts with alcohol to make sure there is no human oil residue left behind for best silicon to heatsink transfer without a compound.

The key to all specs is to stop thermal runaway. Thermal compound does nothing to help or hurt you there.

Just an alternative view. 😀

Grand Nagus!!!!! Wow, I've never seen one before!!! I thought they were just legends. 40,000+ posts! So that's where all those ones and zeros went. For those too ignorant to know, "Nagus" is "Sugan" spelled backwards.😉

HI Witling, generally you will find the Ross... er Grand Nagus in Hot Deals, he puts all his Ferengi underlings to shame

😀

I believe he single handedly boosted the Canon Digital Camera line when he did his review of the A40 right here.

Awesome, looks like I have a green light from you guys. I'm going to start on my FAQ sometime this coming week and I'll make sure I have plenty of pictures. Does anyone have a dead P4 they'd be willing to donate for the purpose of the FAQ? I have plenty of AMD chips but no Pentiums to show in the FAQ.

If you want to make a FAQ, submit it to me and I would be happy to put it up on the main site.

Truthfully I see no point in having another FAQ for this when AS's instructions are all people really need to get the job done. Why duplicate work?

Why would anyone want to read something more indepth than Artic Silver's directions? A person with ADD struggles through those ones already.

Maybe he just wants to try and make it better. Or easier to follow with pics for the n00bish folk. A very nice idea.
